LGBT+ Women in Mexico
Being transgender in Mexico is very dangerous. Open transgender women in Mexico are being deported. For years there have been reports of violence and even murders towards openly gay men in Mexico. Emilio Alvarez Icaza Longoria the chairman of the Human Rights Commission of Mexico City said that “Mexico city had the worst record for homophobic hate crimes”. Between 1995 and 2005 there have been 387 hate crimes with 98% of them unprosecuted.
Come the 21st century men and women fought for their rights to dress with the gender that they associate with. In October 2009 Mexico passed a law that “Prohibits discrimination based on ethnic or national origin such as: gender, age, disability, social status, health condition, religious opinion, preferences of any kind, civil status or any other reason which degrades human dignity.” But still today the LGBT+ community is still facing discrimination and violence due to their gender identity or sexual preference.
