Hispanic Culture Gender Roles
There have been traditional culture gender roles in Mexico regarding behavioral expectations for a man and a woman. These expectations have been in Mexico since the early spanish society, and these expectations are called Machismo and marianismo which dictate certain behavioral rules. Machismo means strong or aggressive masculine pride, and marianismo means veneration for feminine virtues like purity and moral strength. There is a strong emphasis on families and communities to reinforce the society and cultural norms that have happened in Mexico for many generations. Women from all around Mexico have been protesting against how men treat them, for example one woman has been forced to change the way she dressed because of such high expectations,”Far too many men consider it perfectly acceptable, their right in fact, to whistle, leer, follow and grope women on the streets and on public transport”, according to Nina Lakhani. These behavioral rules for men and women are placed there for the trappings of manliness used to dominate women and “keep them in their place.” The expectations of a man is that he will be dominant and independent, and the expectations of a woman is that she will be submissive and dependent. These gender role boundaries are made from the hyper masculine ideal, and women are fighting to change this.
